How to Score 7.0 in IELTS: A Proven 8-Week Study Plan for Nepali Students

📅 December 2025⏱ 8 min read👤 Shama Abroad Team

Achieving a 7.0 band score is required by many top universities. Here is a proven 8-week study plan with daily practice tips, resources and mock test strategy.

Why 7.0 matters

A 7.0 overall band score — with no individual band below 6.5 — is required by many top UK, Australian and Canadian universities for both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. Achieving this from a score of 5.5 or 6.0 is very achievable with the right strategy and consistent practice.

Understanding the four sections

  • Listening (30 min) — 40 questions across 4 recordings. Focus on predicting answers before the recording plays
  • Reading (60 min) — 40 questions across 3 passages. Learn skimming and scanning techniques
  • Writing (60 min) — Task 1 (describe a chart or diagram) and Task 2 (an essay). Task 2 carries more marks
  • Speaking (11–14 min) — 3-part interview. Fluency and coherence matter more than accuracy

Week 1–2: Baseline and diagnosis

  • Take a full timed mock test on Day 1 with no preparation
  • Score your Listening and Reading yourself using the official answer key
  • Have an IELTS trainer assess your Writing and Speaking
  • Identify which sections need the most improvement
  • Set a weekly schedule of minimum 2–3 hours of study per day

Week 3–5: Intensive skill building

  • Listening: 1 full section daily — pause after each section to review wrong answers carefully
  • Reading: 1 full passage daily — focus on True/False/Not Given and Matching Headings question types
  • Writing: 1 Task 1 and 1 Task 2 per week — submit to a trainer for detailed feedback
  • Speaking: Record yourself answering Part 2 cue cards for 2 minutes every day — listen back critically
  • Vocabulary: Learn 10–15 topic-specific words daily using flashcards

Week 6–8: Mock tests and refinement

  • Take 2 full timed mock tests per week under exam conditions
  • Review every single mistake — do not just note the correct answer, understand why
  • Focus heavily on time management — most students lose marks by not finishing
  • For Writing, practice beginning Task 2 essays with a clear thesis statement every time
  • Do at least 3 full speaking practice sessions with a trainer or study partner

  • Cambridge IELTS books 1–18 — the official practice test series
